Call me basic, but I love kombucha. I also love margaritas. So when I came across the idea of combining them into a summery cocktail on Pinterest, it seemed only natural to try it out for a poolside happy hour. And hence these colorful kombucha margies were born.
There’s a particular spicy margarita that I’ve made on several occasions for my friends, and it’s so good that I always get texts later asking for the recipe. I decided to use it as a base of this cocktail but remove the jalapeños, as I didn’t think the spiciness would jive well with the sweetness of the kombucha (Am I wrong? Try it out and let me know!). This recipe is as easy as shaking a few ingredients together and topping off each glass with your favorite kombucha, which is perfect because I can never be bothered to make anything more complicated than that (which is probably why I’m usually all about wine. Translation: lazy). Cheers!
Cocktail shaker & strainer
Cute drinkware, duh!
Serving size: makes 1 cocktail
Course kosher salt to rim glasses (optional)
1.5 shots of silver tequila
The juice of 1 large lime
1 tablespoon of fresh orange juice (I went for tangerines because they were out of oranges – weird. They work great as well, just a bit sweeter!)
1 teaspoon of agave nectar (optional – I usually put this in my spicy margs but I left it out on this occasion since the kombucha adds extra sweetness)
Kombucha to taste (I used plain, passionberry and guava)
Lime slices for garnish
1. If you’re going for salt, first use one of your lime slices to rim a glass with. Pour some salt onto a small plate and swirl the lime-juice covered rim in the salt so that it sticks.
2. Combine tequila, lime juice, orange juice, agave, and ice in your cocktail shaker. Cover and shake vigorously for 30 seconds (yes, a full 30 seconds – it will feel like a long time but makes each cocktail extra frothy and refreshing).
3. Strain into your glass, add ice, and top off with your kombucha of choice. Garnish with lime slice. Das it!
